Braves sign shortstop Jorge Mateo after Ha-Seong Kim injury

Atlanta was forced to add some shortstop depth on Monday.

The Braves signed Jorge Mateo to a one-year deal, the team announced.

The signing comes one day after the team said starting shortstop Ha-Seong Kim would be sidelined four to five months following surgery on his middle finger.

Mateo has spent the past five seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, slashing .224/.269/.368 with 28 home runs.

However, Mateo struggled offensively last season as he hit just .177 with one homer and three RBIs across 83 plate appearances.

Mateo and Mauricio Dubon, whom Atlanta acquired earlier this off-season, should see extended reps at shortstop while Kim recovers.
