Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares has set off for Czechia.
The 33-year-old is joining Team Canada for the 2024 IIHF Men’s World Hockey Championship, Hockey Canada announced Friday.
Tavares joined the the team on Friday ahead of Canada’s opening game on Saturday against Great Britain.
The Mississauga, Ont., native is the fourth player to join Canada after being eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs. Earlier this week, Los Angeles Kings forward Pierre-Luc Dubois, and Tampa Bay Lightning’s Brandon Hagel and Nick Paul, were added to the roster.
Tavares had one goal and one assist for the Leafs as they were eliminated by the Boston Bruins in Game 7 of their first-round series last week. During the regular season, he had 65 points and 29 goals in 80 games.
Internationally, the centre has represented Canada many times and won gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. Tavares also won gold at the 2008 and 2009 World Juniors and helped Canada to win the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
However, Tavares has never won World Championship gold. He represented Canada at the World Hockey Championships just once before, in 2010 when Canada was eliminated in their first game of the knockouts.
The 2024 edition of the tournament, hosted by Czechia, takes place from May 10 to 26.
