Lionel Messi wants to see some changes to Major League Soccer.
The Inter Miami star expressed his frustration over the new MLS rule, which forces an injured player to wait on the sideline for two minutes before they can re-enter the game.
During Saturday’s 3-2 victory over CF Montreal, L’Impact defender George Campbell fouled the Argentine forward, who went down holding his knee. Following the tackle, Messi received medical treatment on the pitch. Miami were awarded a free-kick, but Campbell did not receive a yellow card.
After being deemed fit to play, Messi was sent to the touchline in a critical moment for The Herons, as the ball was in a goal-scoring position. But instead of Messi taking the opportunity to chip away at Miami’s goal difference, he had no choice but to wait it out off the pitch.
“These types of rules…it’s going bad,” the World Cup winner said in Spanish while exiting the match.
After the game, Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino agreed with Messi, and said that the rule “must be revised.”
“The infraction was clear and was a yellow card, and ultimately it was us that lost Leo for two minutes.”
According to new MLS regulations, “if the referee stops play due to a potential player injury in which the player remains on the ground for more than 15 seconds and the medical staff enters the field of play, the player may be required to leave the field of play for two minutes.”
Despite the off-field drama, Inter Miami’s victory kept them at the top of the Eastern Conference table with 27 points in 13 games.
