In the aftermath of an injury-plagued season with the New York Rangers, veteran forward Blake Wheeler isn’t sure whether he wants to lace up the skates again next season.
Per Peter Baugh of The Athletic, Wheeler said “I don’t know” on Tuesday when asked whether he wants to play again next season.
Wheeler, 37, becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He said he still enjoys playing, but also wants to spend more time with his kids.
Wheeler suffered a leg injury on Feb. 15 that kept him out until Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Florida Panthers. It was only a one-game return as the Rangers adjusted their roster for the final two games.
Wheeler had nine goals and 12 assists in 51 games for the Rangers this season. He played on a one-year deal with the Rangers this season after the Jets bought out his contract.
The Minnesota native has 321 goals and 622 assists for 943 points in 1,172 career games with the Rangers, Winnipeg Jets, Atlanta Thrashers and Boston Bruins.
