Maple Leafs hire Lane Lambert as associate coach

New Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube is adding experience to his staff.

The Leafs announced Wednesday that former New York Islanders head coach Lane Lambert has been hired as an associate coach.

Lambert, 59, was fired as Islanders coach last season in the middle of his second season in the role. He guided the club to the playoffs in his first season and finished with a record of 61-46-20.

Previously, Lambert was an associate coach for the Islanders for four years.

The native of Melfort, Sask. also was an assistant coach for the Washington Capitals for four seasons (2014-1818) and the Nashville Predators for three seasons (2011-14). Lambert won the 2018 Stanley Cup with Washington.

The Leafs also announced assistant coach Dean Chynoweth will not be returning.
