BDO customers report hacked accounts, money transferred

A number of BDO customers are reporting on social media that their bank accounts were hacked, with cybercriminals making unauthorized transfers to UnionBank accounts.

According to a report by Manila Bulletin, hackers siphoned money from BDO accounts and transferred it to a UnionBank account under a fake name, and used the funds to buy Bitcoin worth PHP 5 million from a cryptocurrency market on December 11.

BDO has a daily limit of PHP 50,000, while UnionBank allows transfers of up to PHP 500,000 daily.

Manila Bulletin also interviewed several victims and said that they did not click on any malicious link, did not receive any SMS prompts or OTPs that someone logged into their account, while the transfers were more than BDO’s daily limit. They claim that it is a security breach from BDO’s side.

BDO is yet to release a statement on the incident, but recently prompted users to change the passwords on their account.
