Report: Steelers expecting Wilson to start at QB vs. Jets

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expecting veteran Russell Wilson to start at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

Wilson’s been out of the lineup since the pre-season with a calf injury and is now set to return to the playing field.

Justin Fields took the reins under centre for the first six games of the season, leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record and a 32-13 win over the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 5.

“Justin has been really good, and we’ve been really good at times, but not to be confused with great,” Tomlin said earlier this week about Fields’ play. “This is a competitive league. We’re trying to position ourselves to be that team and we got a player with talent who hadn’t had an opportunity to play, so we’re going to potentially explore those things; sometimes it doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with what Justin has done or has not done.”

Rapoport reports Fields is expected to play as well, but Wilson will get the bulk of the snaps.

Wilson will get his first regular-season action with the Steelers after signing a one-year, $1.21-million contract in the off-season and playing one pre-season game. He played in 15 games for the Denver Broncos in the 2023 campaign, registering 28 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 98 passer rating.
