The Houston Texans have signed free agent running back Cam Akers, the team announced on Monday.
The 25-year-old joins a squad with strong running back depth, led by 2021 Pro Bowler Joe Mixon, whom the Texans traded for in March and gave a three-year, $27 million contract extension. Also competing for the top spot is Dameon Pierce, a fourth-round pick by Houston in 2022, who rushed for 1,355 yards in his first two seasons.
Akers was limited to just seven games in 2023 after tearing his Achilles tendon in Week 9 with the Minnesota Vikings. This marked his second such injury, with the first happening during the offseason ahead of the 2021 campaign. He then returned late that year and he helped the Rams earn their first Super Bowl win since 2000.
Originally a second-round selection by Los Angeles in 2020, Akers rushed for 1,443 yards and 10 touchdowns over four seasons with the Rams. He was then traded to the Vikings following the first game of the 2023 season after putting up career highs in carries (188), yards (786) and touchdowns (seven), a year prior.
The Texans have also announced the signing of wide receiver Jared Wayne. Going into his second year with the team, Wayne was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in May of 2023. The 23-year-old has yet to play a game with Houston.
