James Paxton is heading back to Boston.
The Boston Red Sox are acquiring the left-hander from the Los Angeles Dodgers, the team announced on Friday.
Paxton was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on July 22.
The 35-year-old signed with the Dodgers in the off-season and has since pitched to an 8-2 record with a 4.43 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 89.1 innings pitched.
The Ladner, B.C., native has spent 11 seasons in the majors split between the Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees and Red Sox. He has a career 3.76 ERA and a 72-40 record in 174 starts.
To make room for Paxton on the 40-man Roster, the Red Sox transferred right-handed pitcher Bryan Mata to the 60-day Injured List.
