Philadelphia Phillies reliever Jose Alvarado has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for exogenous Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance, MLB announced Sunday.
The suspension is effective immediately, and Alvarado will be ineligible to play in the post-season, if the Phillies qualify.
“The Phillies fully support Major League Baseball’s Joint Prevention and Treatment Program and are disappointed to hear today’s news of Jose’s violation,” the team said in a statement.
Alvarado has pitched in 20 games this season with a 4-1 record, 2.70 ERA and seven saves.
The 29-year-old from Maracaibo, Venezuela, holds a career 19-26 record, 3.40 ERA and 52 saves over nine seasons in the majors with the Tampa Bay Rays and Phillies.
