The Washington Capitals will be without a top centre for a while.
Pierre-Luc Dubois is out three to four months after surgery to repair injuries to his adductor and abdominal muscles, the team announced on Sunday.
Dubois has been out since early November after suffering a lower-body injury against the New York Islanders.
After taking a faceoff against Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Dubois fell to the ice and seemed to be in serious pain, unable to get back up. He was helped off the ice by teammates and immediately went back to the team’s locker room.
He has not returned since then.
Dubois, 27, has had a slow go of things this season and missed time earlier in the year with another lower-body injury. He has been held without a point through six games and is only playing an average of 15:32 per night.
Last season, the Ste-Agathe-Des-Monts, Que., native had 20 goals and 46 assists for a career-high 66 points.
Since being drafted third overall in 2016, Dubois has picked up 165 goals and 243 assists for 408 points in 604 games split between the Columbus Blue Jackets, Winnipeg Jets, Los Angeles Kings and the Capitals.
Washington (7-7-1) sat outside the playoff picture with 15 points in 15 games entering Sunday’s action.
