Canadian winger Adriana Leon makes move to Aston Villa of Women’s Super League

Canadian forward Adriana Leon has signed a two-year deal to join Aston Villa of England’s Women’s Super League, it was announced on Monday.

Leon, 30, had signed a two-year deal with Manchester United just last summer, but limited playing time prompted a loan to the Portland Thorns of the National Women’s Soccer League ahead of the recent World Cup.

“Adriana is someone we’ve monitored over the last 18 months and is someone who has displayed great pedigree in the Barclays WSL,” said Villa manager Carla Ward, in a team statement. “She can play off both sides and will add another dimension to our evolving group.”

Born in Mississauga, Ont., but raised in Maple, Ont., Leon has made 99 appearances for Canada, primarily as a winger, scoring 29 times.

Villa finished in fifth place in the 12-team WSL last season with a W-D-L record of 11-4-7.
