Germany remains undefeated at the FIBA World Cup but its latest victory didn’t come without some moments of tension.
During a timeout, Toronto Raptors point guard Dennis Schroder was engaged in a conversation with teammate Daniel Theis as head coach Gordon Herbert was trying to rally his group during a timeout.
The German coach tried to get his players’ attention in the huddle and decided to grab Schroder, which did not sit well with the point guard. The two got into a heated exchange and Schroder was taken out of the game, though he did later return.
The 29-year-old finished the game with 24 points, 10 assists, two rebounds and was 4-for-7 from three-point range.
Schroder said the exchange with his teammate was a result of emotions running high.
“I mean, basketball is an emotional sport,” Schroder told BasketNews after the game. “It’s a game of runs, and you gotta stay cool. Me and Daniel go way back, I have known him since I was 12 or 13. We had those kinds of moments when we were young as well, but it always helped us to elevate our game.”
“That’s what happened today. We got into it, and I told him, ‘Listen, that’s what you gotta do, and you can tell me the same thing.’ Of course, he’s going to be pissed a little bit. It will itch a little bit, but he will give his all. I think that’s what happened.”
Schroder did not elaborate on the interaction he had with his coach.
When asked, Herbert initially made a joke about his players’ exchange: “I just think Daniel and Dennis were talking about their young days in Braunschweig,” he said.
Pressed further on his interaction with Schroder and how the team would handle any further consequences for the sideline exchange, the German coach said it would be handled internally.
