Spencer Carbery of the Washington Capitals has won the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year, the NHL announced Saturday.
Scott Arniel of the Winnipeg Jets and Martin St. Louis of the Montreal Canadiens rounded out the top three in voting for the award, which is selected by the NHL Broadcasters’ Association.
Carbery, who received 81 first-place votes among 103 ballots, guided the Capitals to 51-22-9 record and an Eastern Conference-leading 111 points during his second season at the helm.
It was the first time the Capitals took the top seed in the Eastern Conference since the 2016-17 season.
Carbery’s family surprised him with the Jack Adams hardware while he thought he was conducting an end-of-season interview.
Carbery is the first to earn coach of the year honours in all of the ECHL, AHL and NHL. He captured the ECHL’s John Brophy Award in 2013-14 with the South Carolina Stingrays and the AHL’s Louis A.R. Pieri Memorial Award in 2020-21 with the Hershey Bears.
The 43-year-old from Victoria served as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs for two seasons before heading to Washington.
The Capitals saw a 20-point rise this season and finished first in the league in comeback wins with 25. They also improved from 28th in offence to second with a 68-goal increase.
