Indiana Fever waive six-time all-star DeWanna Bonner

The Indiana Fever are moving on from DeWanna Bonner.

Indiana announced Wednesday that it has waived the WNBA’s third-highest all-time leading scorer, ending what turned into a fractured relationship.

Bonner signed a one-year deal with the Fever in the off-season after spending the previous 15 years of her career playing with the Phoenix Mercury and Connecticut Sun.

In a corresponding move, Indiana signed guard Aari McDonald for the rest of the season. She averaged 11 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in her time with the team.

Bonner, 37, has appeared in nine games for Indiana this season, but was moved to the bench after the first three. She averaged 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 34.5 per cent from the floor.

She has been away from the team due to personal reasons since June 12 and had requested a trade.

“I want to sincerely thank the Indiana Fever for the opportunity to be part of the Fever franchise. Despite our shared goals and excitement heading into the season, I felt the fit did not work out and I appreciate the organization’s willingness to grant my request to move on, particularly at this point in my career,” Bonner said in a statement released by the team. “I wish the Fever great success as they continue to build around this dynamic group of young players.”

The 37-year-old Bonner will be on waivers for 48 hours which allows teams to pick her up and assume the remainder of her $200,000 contract. If no one signs her she’ll become an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team for the prorated veteran minimum.

A six-foot-four forward, Bonner was originally picked fifth overall by Phoenix in the 2009 WNBA Draft. She has gone on to become a three-time Sixth-Woman of the Year, two-time All-WNBA Team member and two-time champion.

McDonald, meanwhile, has played in three games with Indiana this season via the WBNA’s emergency hardship exception.

The 26-year-old guard has previously played for the LA Sparks and Atlanta Dream.

The Fever enter play Wednesday sitting seventh in the WNBA standings with a 7-7 record.
