The New York Rangers are retaining some muscle.
Enforcer Matt Rempe agreed to a two-year contract, the team said Wednesday. The deal is worth $975,000 per season, sources confirmed to Sportsnet.
Rempe, 22, was set to become a restricted free agent as of July 1.
In 42 games with New York this season, the six-foot-nine, 255-pound winger recorded three goals and five assists while racking up 67 penalty minutes.
Rempe was suspended for eight games for boarding and elbowing Dallas Stars defenceman Miro Heiskanen in December.
Yet Rempe still spent less time in the box than during his 17-game rookie campaign in 2023-24, when he was hit with 71 penalty minutes while adding a goal and an assist.
The Calgary native also spent 18 games with the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack this season, where he notched three goals and two assists with just 22 penalty minutes.
Earlier in June, the Rangers traded longtime winger Chris Kreider and a fourth-round pick to the Anaheim Ducks for prospect Carey Terrance and a third-round pick, clearing cap space for free agency.
Rempe gives new coach Mike Sullivan a depth forward who the organization believes is working hard to develop and has the potential to improve. A sixth-round pick in 2020, Rempe has five goals and six assists at the NHL level.
