Bills announce return of iconic red helmets for final regular-season home game

From Jim Kelly to Andre Reed to Thurman Thomas to Bruce Smith, plenty of Buffalo Bills legends have donned the team’s iconic red helmet.

Stars like Josh Allen and James Cook will join their ranks this season.

The Bills announced Tuesday in a video posted to social media that they’re reviving the former franchise staple for the final regular-season home game in Week 18 against the New York Jets.

They’re doing so as a commemorative effort to relive the former glory of the team and their home, Highmark Stadium, before they open a new stadium in 2026.

Buffalo rocked the red helmet with white and blue stripes from 1987 to 2001 amid its four straight trips to the Super Bowl in the early 1990s.

“There’s no better way to celebrate our fans and honour our team’s history by bringing back the red helmets. The Bills provided this region with some of the most incredible moments in franchise history in the 1990s wearing these helmets and we feel this is a great way to commemorate the closing of Highmark Stadium in our regular season finale,” Bills chief operating officer Pete Guelli said in a release.

In addition to the throwback helmets, the Bills will also don the “standing buffalo” throwback uniforms in Week 5 against the Atlanta Falcons and Week 11 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The standing buffalo design was first introduced in 1962 and features a distinct red buffalo silhouette on the side of the helmet as well as a classic jersey colour scheme.

The Bills open their regular season with a Sunday Night Football showdown on Sept. 7 against the Baltimore Ravens.
