Julien Viel couldn’t have asked for a better roommate for his Olympic debut.
Viel is staying with fellow Canadian Mikael Kingsbury, who knows a thing or two about what it takes to succeed in their chosen sport of moguls.
After finishing ahead of Kingsbury in Tuesday’s men’s qualifying round, Viel sung the praises of the 100-time World Cup winner.
“He’s the best in the world, in my opinion,” Viel told the international broadcasting feed for Milano Cortina 2026, per CBC Olympics. “He’s one of the greatest individual (athletes) that’s ever lived. For me, he’s up there with Michael Jordan and Lewis Hamilton and all that. He’s the GOAT. To do what he’s achieved is just incredible. He’s a great role model and I love rooming with him.”
Viel was second and Kingsbury third in qualifying to secure spots in the final on Thursday.
Kingsbury, one of Canada’s flag-bearers at the opening ceremony, has one gold medal and two silvers in three previous Olympics.
Viel was sixth at last year’s world championships.
On the women’s side, Canada’s Maia Schwinghammer (sixth in qualifying) and Laurianne Desmarais-Gilbert (eighth) both booked spots in Wednesday’s final.
Schwinghammer won bronze at last year’s world championships, while Desmarais-Gilbert was fourth.
