Canadian speedskater Isabelle Weidemann finishes fifth in Olympic 5,000m

Canadian speedskater Isabelle Weidemann didn’t quite have the speed to win a second Olympic medal in a row in the women’s 5,000 metres.

The Ottawa native finished fifth on Thursday at Milano Cortina 2026.

Weidemann won silver in the 5,000 four years ago, one of three medals she captured in Beijing.

Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida, skating in the final pair, won gold in a time of six minutes 46.17 seconds, beating out Meril Conjin of the Netherlands by just .10 seconds.

Norway’s Ragne Wiklund took bronze.

Lollobrigida also won the 3,000 metres on Day 1 of the Olympics.
