Nokia 2.4 Hands-on, First Impressions

HMD Global has recently launched a refresh to one of its entry-level devices in the form of the Nokia 2.4. A successor to last year’s Nokia 2.3, it features a slightly larger display, more RAM and storage, and a slightly bigger battery. Let’s check it out.

Not just to the eyes, but also to the hands, the Nokia 2.4 feels very similar to its predecessor, which isn’t a bad thing at all. It feels nice and solid, features a unibody design, and the back panel comes with a textured matte finish.

Up front, we get a 6.5-inch IPS display coming in at a resolution of 1600 x 720. The bezels surrounding the screen are a little thick for today’s standards, but this is easily forgiven due to the entry-level nature of the device.

A waterdrop notch along the top bezel houses the speakerphone and 5MP front-facing camera. Along the chin, we get the Nokia branding.

On the left side, we get the triple card tray with slots for two nano SIMs and a microSD card. We also get a dedicated Google Assistant button here.

Moving to the right, we get the volume rocker and power button.

Up top, we get the secondary noise-canceling microphone and the 3.5mm headphone port.

Down at the bottom, we get the main microphone, micro USB port, and the loudspeaker.

Flipping it to the back, we get a dual camera module in the upper center consisting of a 13MP main shooter, a 2MP depth sensor, and an LED flash. We also get the capacitive fingerprint scanner and some more Nokia branding.

Powering the Nokia 2.4 is a MediaTek Helio P22 chipset with a PowerVR GE8320 GPU, along with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. This isn’t a huge upgrade over the previous Nokia 2.3, but it should be able to handle some everyday tasks.

Running the software show is stock Android 10, which is thanks to Nokia’s inclusion in Google’s Android One program. According to HMD Global, an Android 11 update is already planned for 2021.

Now for battery, we get a 4,500mAh cell which unfortunately only seems to support up to 10W charging, and only a 5W charger is included in the box.

Overall, the Nokia 2.4 seems to be a solid run-of-the-mill entry-level phone that can provide users the absolute basics for a relatively low price. Sure, there are probably a lot of other phones in the PHP5K-7K price range that offer a lot more in terms of performance and cameras. However, after getting some hands-on time with the Nokia 2.4, its build quality and durability is something it has a definite advantage in.
