After suffering their second shutout loss in their winless season and extending their woeful home record, the Edmonton Elks are making their first drastic change, promoting Jarious Jackson as their new offensive co-ordinator.
Jackson, who joined the Elks’ coaching staff in 2022 as the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, will take over play-calling duties from Stephen McAdoo.
“It’s never easy to make a significant change to your coaching staff during the season, but our results haven’t been up to our standards,” said Elks general manager and head coach Chris Jones on the team website. “Jarious has proven in his career that he’s up to the task of leading an offence to success, and I expect that to be the case given his abilities and familiarity with our team.
“We’ve got 10 games to make significant strides as a team this season, and Jarious is going to be a key part of that process.”
Edmonton remains the lone CFL team without a win this season, dropping to 0-8 after a 27-0 loss to the B.C. Lions. The winless start is the worst in franchise history and their 21 consecutive home losing streak is the longest stretch ever by a North American professional team.
Jackson was a three-time Grey Cup champion as a quarterback with the B.C. Lions and Toronto Argonauts, winning a title in 2006, 2011 and 2012.
After retiring as a player, Jackson began his coaching career as the Lions quarterbacks coach in 2013, then joined Jones’ staffs in Edmonton (2014-15) and Saskatchewan (2016-17).
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity of being an offensive coordinator again in the CFL,” said Jackson on the team website. “It’s a privilege to coach in this league and with this club, so the importance of this role isn’t lost on me.
“We have a lot of work to do to improve our offensive output and meet the high expectations we have as a group. That work begins now, as we’ll make the most of the bye week and get prepared for a tough Winnipeg team on Aug. 10.”
McAdoo will remain on the staff in an advisory role after joining the team in 2022 as assistant coach and offensive coordinator.
