Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray out indefinitely, placed on LTIR

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Wednesday that goaltender Matt Murray is out indefinitely and will be placed on long-term injured reserve to start the 2023-24 season.

The team did not provide specifics on Murray’s injury.

Last season, Murray had a .903 save percentage and 3.01 goals against average while finishing with a 14-8-2 record. The 29-year-old netminder had several injury concerns over the course of the season, but did finish healthy enough to serve as the team’s backup during the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

With the Maple Leafs needing to free up cap space after Ilya Samsonov was awarded a one-year, $3.55 million deal in arbitration, many thought that Murray could be a buyout candidate for Toronto.
