The NFL is looking into whether the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles may have been guilty of tampering prior to the start of free agency in the aftermath of a couple of high-profile signings, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported Thursday.
Pelissero reports the probe centres around the Eagles’ signing of running back Saquon Barkley and the Falcons’ pursuit of quarterback Kirk Cousins.
Barkley signed a three-year, $37.75-million contract that includes $26 million guaranteed from the Eagles, a division rival of his previous team, the New York Giants.
ESPN reported that Barkley’s former coach at Penn State, James Franklin, suggested the Eagles spoke to the running back directly in the “legal tampering” period, which is prohibited.
Cousins, in his introductory press conference, said he had talked to the Falcons’ head athletic trainer prior to his official signing.
The former Minnesota Vikings QB signed a four-year, $180-million deal with the club.
