Reports: Patriots trading QB Mac Jones to Jaguars for late-round pick

The New England Patriots are moving on from Mac Jones as multiple reports suggest the quarterback will be traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a late-round pick.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the two sides were discussing a sixth-round pick as compensation. The deal cannot go through until the league year begins on March 13.

The Patriots selected Jones with the 15th-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He helped the Patriots reach the playoffs in his first season but has struggled since.

Last season, Jones made 11 starts, throwing for 2,120 passing yards with 10 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while owning a 2-9 record. He was benched at times for Bailey Zappe who didn’t fair much better.

The 25-year-old has gone 18-24, throwing 46 touchdowns and 13 interceptions and has a career 85.8 quarterback rating. He will look for a fresh start as the backup to Trevor Lawrence.

Now the Patriots will look to go in a different direction at quarterback as they own the third-overall pick but could also look to the free-agent market as well.
