The race to catch Wayne Gretzky’s goal record seems poised to resume after a short hiatus.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin practised on Friday and was notably not in a non-contact jersey, marking the first time he’s been a full participant with the team since suffering a fractured left fibula on Nov. 18.
Though it’s unlikely the 39-year-old suits up for Friday’s game, the team does play back-to-back on Sunday and Monday so it’s possible Ovechkin will see NHL action sooner rather than later.
He suffered the injury on a shin-on-shin collision with Utah’s Jack McBain. He was listed as week-to-week with a lower left leg injury, but was later ruled out four to six weeks after further evaluation.
Ovechkin recorded 15 goals and 25 points in 18 games before the injury. He now has 868 career NHL goals as he draws near to Gretzky (894) for the all-time record.
The Capitals have managed to keep their hot start going, winning eight of 13 without their goal-scoring phenom. They sit second in the Metropolitan Division with a 21-8-2 record, behind only the speedy New Jersey Devils.
