Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas is heading back to Mercedes as a reserve driver for the 2025 season.
The team made the announcement Thursday.
George Russell, who replaced Bottas at Mercedes in 2022, and rookie Kimi Antonelli will drive for the team next season.
Bottas won 10 races and helped Mercedes win the constructors’ championships every season during his five-year tenure with the team from 2017-21.
“His technical feedback and input were important in helping us to those successes and pushing the team forward,” Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said in a release. “Not only that, but he was also a fantastic colleague and team member. His dry sense of humour and personable nature made him a firm favourite with everyone at Brackley and Brixworth.”
He added: “Welcome home, Valtteri! It’s great to have you back.”
The 35-year-old Bottas spent the past three seasons with Sauber and was the only full-time driver who failed to score a single point during the 2024 campaign.
Sauber opted to clean house — parting ways with Bottas and Zhou Guanyu — and signed veteran Nico Hulkenberg and reigning F2 champion Gabriel Bortoleto.
