Report: Dolphins waive LB Shaquil Barrett from retired list

The Miami Dolphins plan to waive former Pro Bowl edge rusher Shaquil Barrett off the reserve/retired list, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Thursday.

Schefter added that the 32-year-old will be eligible to play for another team this season only if he clears waivers on Friday. However, Barrett won’t be able to play if he’s claimed off waivers by another team.

“We appreciate the Dolphins giving Shaq this opportunity to continue his career in the NFL,” Drew Rosenhaus, Barrett’s agent, said. “Hopefully, he will pass through waivers and become a free agent so he can play again this season. He is in great shape and would be ready to play immediately.”

The Barrett saga began in March when he signed with the Dolphins as a free agent. The veteran linebacker went on to abruptly retire just before the start of training camp.

Before the 2024-25 NFL season, Barrett signed a one-year, $9-million contract with Miami after spending the last five seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Barrett had 4.5 sacks for the Buccaneers last season and has 59 sacks over his career. The Baltimore, Maryland, native led the league in sacks with 19.5 in 2019, was named to the second-team All-Pro, and came fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
