Blue Jays’ Berrios scratched from spring training start vs. Phillies

Jose Berrios’ availability for Opening Day is now in question.

The Blue Jays right-hander was scratched from his spring training start against the Phillies on Thursday with right-elbow inflammation, according to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling.

The team announced that CJ Van Eyk will start in place of Berrios.

Zwelling added that the inflammation was revealed during the World Baseball Classic insurance process, and that this issue is separate from what sidelined the 31-year-old at the end of last season.

Berrios, however, is pain-free, and will continue to throw in the next few days. It is unclear how the issue will impact his availability for the start of the new season, which begins on March 27.

Berrios threw 166 innings last season, posting a 4.17 ERA — the second-highest mark of his career when throwing 100-plus innings.
