Reports: Italy’s Aaron Nola to start vs. Venezuela in WBC semifinal

Italy is making a key change to its starting pitching plans at the World Baseball Classic.

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola will start for Italy against Venezuela in the semifinal on Monday, according to multiple reports.

Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase was first to report the news.

Italy originally had planned to start Michael Lorenzen against Venezuela, but will now hold the Colorado Rockies right-hander back for a potential final against the United States.

Nola started Italy’s final pool game against Mexico. He allowed no runs on four hits and struck out five and walked one in five innings as Italy won 9-1.

Watch the Italy-Venezuela game on Monday on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+ (8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT).
