Justin Fields to start for Steelers in Week 1 matchup against Falcons

After Russell Wilson had secured the starting quarterback spot for the Pittsburgh Steelers ahead of their Week 1 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, a calf injury has abruptly thrown a wrench in those plans.

Instead, Justin Fields will now take the field as the Steelers QB1 on Sunday, according to the team, per Mike Garrafolo.

The Steelers had been bullish on Fields throughout the summer. The development shown by the former first-round pick is one of the reasons Tomlin waited until the pre-season was over before announcing Wilson as the starter.

Wilson, 35, signed with Pittsburgh in the off-season on a one-year contract after being cut by the Denver Broncos in early March.

The nine-time Pro-Bowler threw for 3,070 yards and 26 touchdowns over 15 games in 2023, leading the Broncos to a 7-8 record in games he took the field.

Fields, meanwhile, played in just 13 games with the Chicago Bears last season, passing for 2562 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 657 yards and four scores.

While Wilson dealt with a calf injury in the days leading up to the season opener, Fields had been taking first-team reps knowing this scenario might play out.

The Steelers and their new starting QB take on the Falcons in Atlanta at 1:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. PT.
