Google launches Read Along, an interactive app that helps children learn how to read

The COVID-19 pandemic has closed schools globally, leaving families to look for new ways to teach their children to improve the way they read. To help resolve this issue, Google has shared with families early access to “Read Along,” an Android app for children above the age of 5.

Read Along is a free app that helps children learn how to read. It has an in-app “reading buddy” called Diya that listens to your kids read out loud, provides help when they struggle, and rewards them if they do well. It utilizes Google’s text-to-speech and speech recognition technology to tell whether your child is having difficulty reading. If a kid needs help, he/she may simply tap on Diya to help her pronounce a word or sentence.

Read Along is currently available in 180 countries in nine languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi. Given the nature of the app, Google did not add any ads or in-app purchases within Read Along. It also works offline without WiFi or data and doesn’t require users to sign in.

Click here to download the app from the Google Play Store.
