Elks hire veteran CFL executive Rick LeLacheur as interim president/CEO

The Edmonton Elks are bringing back a familiar face to run the organization, hiring Rick LaLacheur as interim president/CEO, the team announced on Tuesday.

The move comes a week after the last-place Elks parted ways with president/CEO Victor Cui, who was in the role for less than two years.

LeLacheur was president/CEO of the Edmonton CFL team from 2002-11, a period in which the franchise won two Grey Cups.

The Edmonton native, 74, also was president of the B.C. Lions for four seasons before retiring at the end of the 2022 season. He was hired by previous owner David Braley, who died in 2020. LeLacheur helped transition the franchise to new ownership in Amar Doman in 2021.

LeLacher received the CFL’s Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award before his retirement in 2022.

The Elks won their first game of the season and snapped a 13-game losing streak dating back to last season last week in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats.

However, the Elks are still on a North American pro sports record 22-game losing streak at home. They have a chance to end that skid Sunday against the Ottawa Redblacks.

In recent years, attendance has fallen dramatically in Edmonton, coinciding with a fall down the standings along with instability in coaching and executive roles.
