The Los Angeles Angels are calling up first-base prospect Nolan Schanuel after selecting him at No. 11 in the 2023 MLB Draft, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
Schanuel, 21, has played 21 games in the minors since being selected in the draft six weeks ago and has slashed .370/.510/.493 between three minor-league levels. In the 16 double-A games he has played with the Rocket City Trash Pandas, he has one home run and 12 RBIs.
He was drafted out of Florida Atlantic University after slashing .447/.615/.868 while hitting 19 home runs and garnering a strong 14-71 strikeout-to-walk ratio in his junior year with the Owls.
He’s the first player in the 2023 draft to make the major leagues and is the first player since Garrett Crochet in 2020 with the Chicago White Sox to make his MLB debut the same year he was drafted.
According to Passan, his promotion is the fastest since pitcher Don Gleaton with the Rangers in 1979. The last hitter to be promoted this quickly was catcher Brian Milner with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1978.
The Angels are trying to chase down the final wild-card spot after choosing to hold on to phenom Shohei Ohtani at the trade deadline and shift to buyers. They’re currently seven games behind the Toronto Blue Jays for the spot.
