Veteran NBA referee Eric Lewis informed the league Wednesday that he was retiring.
The decision by the 52-year-old referee caused the league to close its investigation into suspicious social media activity from the past season.
After since-deleted tweets were revealed by a pair of Twitter users in May, the league opened an investigation into whether Lewis violated NBA rules by speaking about officiating in an unauthorized manner.
It was never determined if Lewis was using the account, which utilized the name “blair cuttliff.”
Lewis worked more than 1,200 games, counting both regular season and playoffs, in 19 seasons as an NBA referee.
Before the 2022-23 NBA Finals, Lewis had been chosen to work the finals in each of the previous four seasons. Given the investigation, the league decided to keep Lewis off this year’s finals between the Denver Nuggets and Miami Heat.
