With the countdown to puck drop on the NHL’s regular season down to mere hours, teams have continued to share lineup decisions, injury updates and other various info.
Keep up with all the updates from Tuesday below.
Head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed Jake Guentzel will be playing in the Penguins’ season/home opener against the Chicago Blackhawks Tuesday night.
After undergoing surgery on his right ankle back in August, Guentzel was originally expected to miss the start of the 2023-24 season due to his 12-week recovery timeline.
Guentzel, 29, first joined team practice in a non-contact fashion on Sep. 29 but was upgraded to full participation on Oct. 3. Ahead of Tuesday’s announcement, Sullivan had listed the forward as “day-to-day.”
Guentzel’s early return is a welcome addition to the Penguins lineup, as he looks to build off a 73-point (36 goals, 37 assists) campaign in 2022-23.
Two days ahead of their first game of the season, the Wild announced Kirill Kaprizov has been named as an alternate captain.
The 26-year-old Russian rounds out a leadership group already consisting of veterans Marcus Foligno (alternate) and Jared Spurgeon (captain).
Drafted by the Wild in 2015, Kaprizov is entering his fourth year with the team and the third year of his five-year, $45 million contract. He’s coming off a 2022-23 season that saw him lead the team in points (75), goals (40), power-play goals (17), power-play points (32) and shots (261).
Kaprizov is set to make his debut wearing the ‘A’ when Minnesota hosts the Florida Panthers Thursday.
On Monday, the Flyers revealed their opening-night roster which saw Rasmus Ristolainen on the injured reserve.
But according to general manager Daniel Briere, there is still a chance the defenceman could play in the team’s season opener against the Columbus Blue Jackets. With a backdated IR stint, he’d be eligible to be activated before Thursday.
Ristolainen missed Philadelphia’s pre-season finale on Oct. 5 as a result of his undisclosed injury. However, he did practise with the team Tuesday.
Over 74 regular-season games with the Flyers in 2022-23, the 28-year-old recorded 20 points.
