Blue Jays call up RHP Wes Parsons to start regular-season finale against Rays

Right-handed pitcher Wes Parsons will take the mound Sunday afternoon when the Toronto Blue Jays host the Tampa Bay Rays in their final game of the regular season.

Toronto announced Parsons had been selected to their roster and will be active for Sunday’s game.

Parsons, who hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2019 and played in South Korea during the past two seasons, signed a minor-league contract with the Blue Jays in May.

The 31-year-old had a 1-3 record, 5.67 ERA and 29 strikeouts in 33 relief appearances over two seasons with the Atlanta Braves and Colorado Rockies.

He posted a 9-4 record, 4.85 ERA and 98 strikeouts over 17 starts with triple-A Buffalo this season.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Parsons, right-handed reliever Jay Jackson was designated for assignment.

The Blue Jays (89-72) lost 7-5 on Saturday night to the Rays but secured a spot in the post-season after the Texas Rangers defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-1.

Win or lose, the Blue Jays will also have to watch the out-of-town scoreboard to determine if they’ll face the Rays again or the Minnesota Twins in the wild-card round. Toronto’s opponent will depend upon the results from the Rangers and Houston Astros.

Watch the Blue Jays face the Rays live on Sportsnet or Sportsnet+ starting at 3 p.m. ET / noon PT.
