Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Conor Timmins will be sidelined week-to-week with a lower-body injury, head coach Sheldon Keefe told reporters on Monday.
Timmins had an MRI scan to determine the severity of the injury that he suffered in the team’s pre-season game against the Montreal Canadiens on Sept. 29.
The 25-year-old was having a standout performance during pre-season, where he scored six points in two games, including a four-point night against the Buffalo Sabres.
Toronto acquired the defenceman from the Arizona Coyotes last season, and in 25 games, Timmins had 14 points while skating third-pair minutes.
The Maple Leafs’ mission with Timmins during training camp was to round out his game so he can be just as effective in his own zone, without the puck.
“It’s a matter of consistency,” Keefe told reporters. “There’s more to playing that position, right? It’s consistently being reliable to break the puck out, reliable to defend, reliable to play against good players at times, not have to be sheltered. All those kinds of things are important to take a step.
“He’s worked really hard to give himself a chance to compete here in camp, and it’s good to see him get rewarded on a night like tonight.”
Timmins is in the first-year of a two-year contract extension that carries a $1.1-million cap hit.
Keefe also noted that defenceman John Klingberg continues to deal with an upper-body injury but said that it is a minor ailment. Klingberg has been sidelined the past five days of camp with the injury.
