Senators name BioSteel co-founder Matt Nichol director of player health and performance

The Ottawa Senators have named Matt Nichol, a co-founder of supplement company BioSteel Sports Nutrition, as director of player health and performance, the team announced Tuesday.

According to a team release, Nichol has coached, mentored and trained professional and elite amateur athletes from the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, NCAA, U Sports, Basketball Canada, Tennis Canada, Gymnastics Canada, Bobsleigh Canada and the Canadian Track and Field Association.

Nichol, who worked with John Celenza and Mike Cammalleri to start up BioSteel in 2009, sold his stake in the company on Oct. 1, 2019.

From 2002-09, Nichol was the head strength and conditioning coach for the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2004, he was the strength and conditioning coach for Canada’s World Cup of Hockey-winning team.

On Nichol’s website, Senators president of hockey operations Steve Staios says in a testimonial that he worked with Nichol for 11 years as a player, adding, “I can say with 100 per cent confidence that Matt Nichol was the greatest influence on my professional hockey career!”

BioSteel filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 14.
