Instagram has started using video selfies to verify user identity. This update was spotted by users and is now available in some parts of the globe.
Instagram owner, Meta, says that video selfies that users upload will never be visible on Instagram and will be deleted in 30 days. It also won’t collect biometric data nor use the company’s face recognition technology. The company will just use the video clip to tell the company’s AI algorithms that the user is, in fact, a real person.
Video selfie verification has been in development by Instagram for quite a while now. This security check started rolling out last August 2020.
The feature is being implemented for new accounts; so far, existing accounts don’t need to verify their identification via video selfie yet.
