Android 13 initial developer preview just got released and gives intriguing hints about where Google will be focusing on this year’s big mobile OS update.
The new features include improved theme options and privacy features, and a load of backend updates. The sneak peek is meant for developers rather than end-users.
Android 13 expands the active app icons to all apps rather than just Google’s. The themed icons feature lets app icons change the color tint that goes well with the chosen wallpaper.
Adjustments have also been made to how Android takes care of permissions and security. One of the features is that the new photo picker allows users to share photos and videos with a different app without the need to assign permissions to see all the photos on the device.

There is also a lot going on internally with the new developer preview like new WiFi permission allowing apps to discover and connect to WiFi points without the need for location permissions, and language preferences having an option of being set per-app.
