Softbank Group Corp’s sale of Arm Ltd. to NVIDIA Corp. has collapsed, according to reports.
In a report by Reuters, Softbank’s sale of British semiconductor and software design company Arm to American GPU designer NVIDIA will no longer push through. Instead, Arm will plan for a USD 80 billion IPO.
The deal was announced in 2020 but faced several regulatory hurdles in the U.S., citing that it could hurt competition in new markets. The deal was also scrutinized by British and EU regulators, citing concerns that it could push up prices and reduce choice and innovation.
NVIDIA’s acquisition of Arm would provide the former a big advantage to compete with rivals, namely Intel and AMD.
Reuters said that NVIDIA declined to comment, while Arm and SoftBank are yet to respond.
