Ottawa PWHL sells out home opener, set to be largest women’s pro game

Ottawa’s PWHL entry has sold out its home opener on Jan. 2, and the team is projecting attendance that would break the record for a women’s professional hockey game.

In a tweet on Saturday, Ottawa GM Mike Hirshfeld said the team had sold out its home opener and the expected crowd would “be the largest women’s professional game in history.”

If that projection comes true, it would mean the crowd would be larger than the 7,765 that showed up for the April 2022 SDHL championship game between Lulea and Brynas in Sweden.

Earlier this month, Ottawa announced it had passed 5,700 seats sold, and the Hockey News has since reported the team has sold more than 8,000 tickets.

TD Place Arena, home of the Ottawa club, has an official capacity of 6,500 but does have the capability of adding 1,500 seats for some events. The rink did have a capacity of 10,550 when the Senators played there, prior to 2006.

Ottawa joins the Toronto and Montreal teams in selling out their openers, though Mattamy Athletic Centre (2,638) and Verdun Auditorium (4,114) are decidedly smaller.
