76ers’ Embiid to be re-evaluated in four weeks after undergoing knee surgery

The Philadelphia 76ers said reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid underwent successful surgery Tuesday on the lateral meniscus in his left knee and will be re-evaluated in about four weeks.

Embiid, who had already missed 14 games earlier this season due to previous injuries, was hurt during last Tuesday’s loss against the Golden State Warriors.

The 29-year-old centre leads the league with an average of 35.3 points per game and scored a franchise-record 70 points during a 133-124 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Jan. 22.

Embiid is also averaging 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists this season.

The 76ers (30-19) are fifth in the Eastern Conference with one game remaining before Thursday’s NBA trade deadline.
