Connor Bedard could return as soon as tonight vs. Penguins

Connor Bedard, sidelined more than a month with a broken jaw, could return to action as soon as Thursday night against the Chicago Blackhawks, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported.

Friedman added that Bedard and the Blackhawks are checking with doctors to green-light a return. A timeline was not given when Bedard first suffered the injury, but a broken or fractured jaw usually requires four-to-six weeks to heal.

Bedard suffered the injury when he was leveled by New Jersey defenceman Brendan Smith midway through the first period of a 4-2 loss to the Devils on Jan. 5.

He returned to the ice in a non-contact sweater on Jan. 15. Although he missed out on playing in the All-Star Game in Toronto, he did attend some of the events as an observer.

Bedard, 18, was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft. Despite being out more than a month, he still leads all rookies in goals (15) and is tied for the points lead (33).

Bedard was hit after he carried the puck into the Blackhawks’ offensive zone. Smith was not penalized on the play but there was a series of skirmishes between the teams after Bedard departed.
