NHL Fit Check: Stylist to UK icons on All-Star weekend’s best looks

Few among the far-reaching orbit of the athlete fashion world have been granted the chance to collaborate with the type of all-time talents Carlotta Constant has.

Having honed her craft in-house at fashion magazines like GQ, the London-based stylist and creative consultant has styled some of the sports world’s most iconic figures, from Formula One’s Lewis Hamilton, to football’s Thierry Henry and David Beckham. The list of those who have donned looks crafted by her extends far beyond that trio, past the sports world, to icons of film and hip hop, too.

For Constant, though, it was always about trying to chart a path to working alongside some of football’s most hallowed names.

“Growing up in a household where football — particularly anything Real Madrid-related — was a constant topic of conversation, I developed a keen interest in sports early on,” Constant says. “Being a bit of a tomboy myself, I found myself drawn to the energy and charisma of athletes.”

During her time with GQ, she gravitated towards working with the sporting stars who spun through the magazine’s pages, guided by that homegrown passion.

“I made a conscious effort to seek out opportunities to work with those I admired, and fortunately I was able to work with some of the greatest athletes of our time, including David Beckham, Zlatan Ibrahimović and Lewis Hamilton, among others,” she says.

“It’s been an incredible journey that has allowed me to combine my love for fashion with my admiration for athletic prowess.”

In Part IV of our NHL Fit Check series, we asked Constant to turn her expertise to the hockey world.

Each month until the end of the 2023-24 season, we’re breaking down the best style from around the game, through the eyes of professional stylists who’ve crafted looks for elite athletes across the sports world. While the first three editions of this series saw us parsing the sartorial tradition of the hockey world, the joyful chaos of the NHL’s All-Star Weekend granted us a reprieve, as the game’s best were offered a chance to show some more individuality off the ice with the usual dress code stuffed away.

“I must admit my knowledge of the National Hockey League’s style was quite limited — however, I was struck by the daring and adventurous spirit evident in the players’ fashion choices,” Constant says. “There’s a sense of risk-taking and a willingness to push boundaries.

“It’s clear that some players are embracing individuality and expressing themselves through their personal style, a trait that resonates deeply with me as someone who values creativity and self-expression in fashion.”

With that in mind, here’s how Constant ranked the best looks from the NHL’s All-Star festivities earlier this month:

10. Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl tailored in tandem

CONSTANT: “Connor and Leon exemplify the art of coordinated dressing, where their outfits harmonize beautifully. From the choice of colours, it looks like they’ve curated their looks together with precision. Their synchronized style speaks volumes about their synergy and shared fashion sensibilities.”

9. Rasmus Dahlin all-in on formal

CONSTANT: “Rasmus looks great in this cord suit but for a modern twist, I’d have maybe opted for a more relaxed approach. While the tie adds a touch of formality, I can’t help but imagine the suit paired with a sleek black roll neck or t-shirt for a more contemporary vibe. It’s all about striking the perfect balance between classic and contemporary.”

8. David Pastrnak goes bold in Bruins gold

CONSTANT: “David’s fashion is a love affair of boldness and fun, as evidenced by his fearless choice of attire. Wearing a vibrant yellow suit requires a special kind of confidence, and David effortlessly embodies that confidence.”

7. Auston Matthews at home in Drew House

CONSTANT: “Auston’s look exudes an undeniable charm and confidence. With a relaxed stance and a casually stylish outfit, he proves that cool and casual indeed win the race.”

6. Mitch Marner, William Nylander’s red-carpet balance

CONSTANT: “Despite their distinct styles, Mitch and William both showcase exceptional taste in their outfits. Mitch’s playful checked jacket is very fun with its texture, while William’s beige suit impresses with its flawless fit.”

5. Willy Styles laid back in beige

CONSTANT: “William’s discerning eye for style is evident in every aspect of his ensemble, from the impeccable coordination of tones. It’s clear that he not only knows what he’s talking about, but embodies it.”

4. Jeremy Swayman’s casual coordination

CONSTANT: “It’s a testament to the versatility and ease of a co-ord, showcasing how effortlessly one can achieve sartorial elegance with the right pieces. Truly, in the realm of fashion, you simply can’t go wrong with a co-ord.”

3. Thatcher Demko keeps it simple

CONSTANT: “Despite the simplicity of his white overshirt, you can tell it’s a special piece from the exceptional quality of the material. His choice to leave the collar slightly unbuttoned adds a touch of casual elegance, allowing for a glimpse of the meticulously-layered pieces underneath. It’s a masterclass in refined dressing, where every element is thoughtfully curated to achieve a seamlessly polished look.”

2. Pasta returns with the double denim

CONSTANT: “An effortlessly relaxed vibe that speaks volumes about his personal style. The seamless tonal coordination of his outfit hints at an individual who knows how to have fun with fashion while maintaining a laid-back attitude. It’s a refreshing reminder that style doesn’t have to be stiff or serious.”

1. Quinn Hughes and quiet luxury

CONSTANT: “At the moment, in the fashion industry, it’s all about quiet luxury. Sometimes less is truly more, and that’s precisely what I admire about Quinn’s aesthetic. He effortlessly allows the exquisite craftsmanship of the Hermes leather overshirt to take centre stage.”
