Google now offers Google Meet premium features for free

Google is now offering its premium video conferencing product, the Google Meet, for free.

Starting in early May, anyone with an email address can sign up for Meet and gain access to the same features available in its business and education users. These include simple scheduling, screen sharing, real-time captions, layouts, and an expanded tile view.

Since January, Google Meet has seen a spike in usage, hosting 3 billion minutes of video meetings this month. Google is taking its time rolling out Google Meet to ensure security and urges users to sign up to be notified when it’s available.

Google Meet is focused on security, and has the following features turned on by default:

  • Controls to admit or deny entry to a meeting, as well as muting or removing participants if needed.
  • No anonymous users are allowed to join meetings.
  • Meet video meetings are encrypted in transit, and all recordings stored in Google Drive are encrypted in transit and at rest.
  • No plugins are required to use Meet on the Web and is compatible with other modern browsers.
  • Meet data is not used for advertising and is not sold to third parties.

Google is also removing the 60-minute meeting limitation until after September 30. Additionally, enterprise and educational users will also gain free access to Google Meet’s premium features if they also use G Suite.
