Nintendo confirms that there were unauthorized logins on about 160,000 Nintendo Network IDs (NNID) beginning of April of this year.
In a statement (roughly translated from Japanese), Nintendo said that login IDs and passwords were obtained illegally by some other means other than the company’s service. Information registered in NNID such as name, date of birth, country/region, and email address, may have been viewed.
If a user is using the same password for NNID and Nintendo account, the balance and registered credit card or PayPal may have also been illegally used in the My Nintendo Store or Nintendo eShop.
As a response, Nintendo is disabling the function of logging into a Nintendo account via NNID. Passwords were also reset for NNIDs and Nintendo accounts and users will be notified by email of the reset.
Nintendo also advises users to avoid reusing passwords, set different passwords for NNID and Nintendo account, and to enable two-step verification.
