NBI pushes for 1 social media account per person, SIM card registration

In an attempt to curb the rise of cybercrime and online scammers, the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is lobbying for one social media account per person, with Facebook at the forefront and the bare minimum.

To further reinforce the mandate, NBI-Cybercrime Division chief Victor Lorenzo said that the proposed measure of the registration of prepaid subscriber identity module (SIM) cards must be passed. “Malaking tulong sa law enforcement perspective ‘yung one person, one social media account. Malaki din tulong ‘yung SIM [Card] Registration Act nation,” Lorenzo said.

Last June, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III also reiterated that there should be a “one person, one Facebook account” policy to prevent online trolling for the upcoming elections.

Similarly, PNP Chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar expressed his agreement with Sen. Pres. Sotto’s proposal, saying that Facebook must require netizens to use their real names to prevent the spread of fake news and scams. “There should be greater netizen’s commitment and accountability so it won’t be all fake news and character assassination and even scams that we’re seeing,” PNP Chief Gen Eleazar said.

Currently, all bills regarding the matter are pending before the Senate and House of Representatives.
