DOTr to implement cashless transaction on EDSA Busway System starting October 1

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) will begin the implementation of a cashless transaction system using beep cards on public utility buses (PUBs) of the EDSA Busway System.

Starting October 1, commuters will not be allowed to go onboard without beep cards. In line with this new policy, LTFRB encourages commuters to purchase and load their own beep cards to avoid inconveniences upon the implementation of the automated fare collection system.

According to DOTr Assistant Secretary for Road Transport and Infrastructure Steve Pastor, this initiative is part of the added safety measures to reduce the further spread of COVID-19 by reducing physical contact between passengers and service providers. This also reduces the waiting time and queuing of passengers.

“We want to ensure that commuters along EDSA will have a safer and comfortable travel, while at the same time providing them a more seamless and efficient system of public transport,” said Pastor.

Passengers are also required to wear wearing face masks and face shields.

A joint project of the DOTr, LTFRB, and MMDA,  the EDSA Busway transport commuters from Monumento to PITX and vice versa, through a dedicated median bus lane which lowers travel time to just less than an hour. It began its operations last July 1.

Currently, beep cards are used as mode of payment in various public transport such as LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3, P2P buses, and modern PUVs nationwide. Commuters may reload their beep cards through LRT and MRT stations, FamilyMart and Ministop branches, Bayad Center and their affiliates, or via loading partners BPI, Eon by Unibank, Akulaku, and Justpayto.

BeepTM cards can be loaded through LRT and MRT stations, FamilyMart and Ministop branches, Bayad Center and their affiliates, or via Over-the-Air (OTA) loading partners such as BPI, Eon by Unibank, Akulaku, and Justpayto.
