Ways to Extend Wi-Fi Signal In Your Home

Have you ever experienced getting pissed while you are playing or watching videos because it keeps on buffering or lagging? If you feel like your Wi-Fi is getting sluggish, there are plenty of tools you can use to test your internet speed and many ways to enhance the Wi-Fi signal to increase its efficiency.

Move your Router to a Better Location

There are a lot of things in your home, capable of blocking a Wi-Fi signal because not all rooms and spaces are created equal. A variety of construction materials can slow down or mirror the waves coming from the router, leading to a weaker signal. These are the common obstacles that block the signal:

  • Metal/thick doors
  • Drywall
  • Concrete
  • Windows
  • Cabinets

So, the best way to ensure a strong signal is to place it in a spot with a direct line of sight to the device. Not be the exact center of the home, but rather the center of the need for connection. Also, keep it away from heavy-duty appliances or electronics as well, since running those nearby can impact Wi-Fi performance.

Update Your Router Firmware

Well, maybe your router just needs to be updated. Update your firmware regularly for performance improvements, better features, and security updates.

Change the Channel of your router.

This one is for those who don’t mind getting into the router settings, and more importantly, someone who knows how to get into the router’s administration page. You can do this by navigating to a specific address in your web browser.

Use External Antennas

Moving the router isn’t always possible, but a lot of routers support an external antenna. If your router is stuck under your desk and there is no right way to move it out, an external antenna can be a great way to get the signal from a better position to broadcast.

Buy a Wi-Fi Extender/Repeater

Essentially, this system logs into your Wi-Fi network and then retransmits the signal, allowing you to log in to the extension and get a better signal quality while farther away from the router.

Remember that walls will degrade the strength, so place the repeater accordingly. It’s usually better to put the Wi-Fi repeater closer to the router to get good signal strength than further away.

Ditch the Out-of-Date Router

How old is your router now? Did you know equipment manufacturers make improvements to their products over time? If you’ve used the same router for years, THIS IS THE SIGN that you need to replace it with a new one because your router might not support the more modern Wi-Fi standard.

So that’s it. How about you, what do you do when your Wi-Fi signal is dropping? Let us know in the comments.
